Workforce Development
Program
The Workforce
Development program is designed to assist clients to become job
ready and/or secure
employment. The program consists of two
components; the LFTS Collaborative and the Working Poor Employment
Program.
Since
1998, Davis Street has been committed to assisting families and
individuals in career development as a critical step in addressing
the cycle of poverty. The Alameda County Social Services, San
Leandro Works! Program has gone through a series of revisions and
improvements and is now the Job Preparation and Placement Program,
which we have implemented through the Lifting Families to Self
Sufficiency Collaborative (LFTS).
The LFTS Collaborative is partnership led by Davis Street together
with San Leandro Chamber of Commerce and Child Care Links. The
program works exclusively with Cal Works families in job preparation
and placement, and includes workshops that focus on resume writing,
interview skills, job-hunting tactics and job placement. Each client
enrolled in this program is referred by Alameda County Social
Services and is ready to secure employment.
The second component is focused on the working poor families in our
community and assists clients who are in need of employment and/or a
better paying job. Workshops are conducted on a daily basis and are
open to walk-in clients. Through this program, clients are offered
resources such as one-on-one job developer consultations to define
their employment goals, access to our dress for success closet as
well as an opportunity to participate in our Individual Development
Account program (IDA).
The IDA program provides a unique opportunity for a client to choose
an area of financial focus, such as home buying, education, micro
business or an automobile and open a 2:1 match savings program. For
example, a client can choose to focus on education and make a
commitment to save $2,000 where they will receive a matching $4,000
thereby allocating $6,000 toward their educational goal. According
to the HIRE evaluation of our IDA program, clients who participated
in the IDA program were more likely to stay employed, obtain a
higher wage, maintain greater hours of work, reported a higher level
of job satisfaction and tenure in the job.
Clients enrolled in the either component of our Workforce
Development Program receive one on one consultation with a job coach
and a job developer to ascertain their skills and career goals.
Clients are able to search for employment opportunities, gain a
greater awareness of which they would like to work for and why,
secure employment and/or increase their current wages. To find out
more on how to participate in this program please call 510-347-4620.
The Workforce Development Program is funded through a variety of
sources such as Alameda County Social Services, Associated Community
Action Partners, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Haas
Foundation, the Cowell Foundation as well as generous donations
provided by the community.
