SAN LEANDRO — In an effort to get low-income families more money from tax credits, Mayor Shelia Young and Davis Street Family Resource Center will launch the new Summer Tax Amendment Program on Thursday.

The program, which is the first of its kind in Alameda County, will be from 4 to 8 p.m. every Thursday in August at the Davis Street site, 3081 Teagarden St.

Eowyn Gorman, client services director for the nonprofit, said low-income residents of San Leandro who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit can receive expert tax assistance from certified public accountants (CPAs) regarding tax amendments and filing back taxes.

Gorman said more than 2,500 mailers went out to Davis Street clients informing them of the new service. People who have not yet filed for the Earned Income Tax Credit can file for the credit up to three years back. Gorman said the program has the full support of the Internal Revenue Service, too.

While Davis Street serves as a volunteer-run income tax site during tax season, Gorman said she's been wanting to do more.

"It's an innovative program," she said. "I'm hoping to get more dollars into the hands of those that need it the most."

Gorman said Young has been instrumental in getting the program off the ground by paying the postage for the notices through her Mayor's Community Fund and getting the CPAs to help.

In a prepared statement, Young said, "We aregrateful to members of the community who have volunteered to assist in offering this no-charge opportunity for families to claim and receive sorely needed funds they are unaware exists for their benefit."

"San Leandro families who qualify stretch their resources weekly and should take advantage of the thousands of dollars that go unclaimed annually by participating in this (program)," she added.
