San
Leandro day care site burglarized SAN LEANDRO — A $216 case of candy that was supposed to be used to raise money for one of Davis Street Family Resource Center's day care sites was stolen over the weekend, among other things. At the nonprofit organization's Jefferson Elementary School day care site, windows were broken along with a vending machine that had the money taken out of it, said doMetryse Lewis, the site supervisor. Educational CDs and DVDs, plus 15 children's video games also were missing from the facility. Lewis said the center lost about $700 worth of items. "I think that when people take from children it's unfortunate because they are the ones that lose out," Lewis said. "It's saddening to me." Lewis believes the break-in happened late Sunday night. She said whoever did it had an idea of what they were doing because they tried cutting the wires of the site's alarm system. She also thinks someone, possibly the same person, tried to burglarize the center two weeks ago because the locks on the doors had been tampered with. The San Leandro Police Department is investigating the case, said Lt. Marc DeCoulode on Monday. Valorie Robles, an executive assistant at Davis Street, said because of tough economic times, the nonprofit — known for helping low-income families and individuals — lacks the money to replace the items. She is hoping community members step forward and make a donation. Davis Street is a nonprofit with a mission to help low-income people living in the Eden Area — San Leandro, San Lorenzo, Castro Valley, Ashland and Cherryland — and to improve their quality of life through short- and long-term assistance. Originally established in 1970 as a ministry of the First Christian Church of San Leandro, Davis Street has matured into a multifaceted family resource agency. As the only multi-service family support agency in the San Leandro area, Davis Street provides services to more than 10,000 people in need every year. Programs and services include low-cost and subsidized child care, emergency food and clothing, acute medical care, crisis counseling, job preparation and placement services, holiday food and toy basket programs, and information and referral.
