Holiday Basket Program
For years Davis
Street Family Resource Center has collaborated with the Alameda
County Fire Department to serve families in need with a holiday
basket that includes a
turkey or large chicken with all of the
fixings to prepare at home and new unwrapped toys for children to
receive on their special holiday. In December 2006 we served over
1000
families and over 2500 children with a meal and toys that they would
otherwise go without. Clients who qualify for the Holiday Basket
Program must be of low income and live, work or go to school in San
Leandro, San Lorenzo, Castro Valley and the unincorporated area of
Ashland.
Donations
are received throughout the community in the form of new toys,
nonperishable food items, and turkeys and cash donations. Bins are
placed throughout the schools within our service area as well as in
local businesses that are looking to give back to their community.
Generous donors such as Shaffer and Sons provide cold storage that
enables us to keep turkeys fresh until distribution and produce
suppliers from farms in Salinas generously donated fresh produce
items for the Holiday Baskets.
Our Holiday Basket Program is primarily run through volunteers, such
as through the Alameda County Fire Department and community
individuals and groups who are committed to assisting others in the
giving season. In order to serve the many families that are in need,
volunteers are a crucial component to the success of our program.
Volunteers assist with bin distribution and pick-up, toy sorting and
bagging, holiday box assembly and assistance on the days of
distribution. On many occasions, firefighters who have finished a
long four-day shift, will donate their time and energy in preparing
for and giving out Holiday Baskets to families who are most in need.
The Holiday Basket Program, which serves over 1000 families in need,
could not operate without the support of our volunteers. On behalf
of the families we serve, Davis Street thanks each volunteer that
has donated their time to help others.
