Food Bank
The
hallmark of the Davis Street Family Resource Center is the emergency
food program. Nearly 35 years ago, the ministry of the First
Christian Church distributed food
to the poorest residents of San
Leandro. Today, the program has developed into a “safety net” that
helps thousands of low-income families and seniors. In addition to
providing folks with a 5-7 day food package, we offer workshops on
nutrition and menu planning on a shoestring budget.
We believe that no one should go to bed hungry because they do not
have enough food. This is particularly true with respect to children
and our elders. In fact, nearly 60% of the people who seek food
assistance have children under the age of 18 while over 500 seniors
depend on the nutrition provided by our food packages each month.
The food bank is one component of the Family Support Services we
offer. Our service area is San Leandro, San Lorenzo, Castro Valley,
Ashland and the surrounding communities. A family must be income
eligible and live within our service area. To access services, each
client meets with a Family Advocate to discuss their current
situation and provide resources that will address their needs. We
typically serve an average of 925 families per month with this
valuable service. For hours of operation, call 510-347-4620.
Our food sources are derived from USDA Commodities, The Alameda
County Community Food Bank, and Alameda County Social Services and
through the generous donations of our community. The program
consists of three food sources; USDA Commodities, Emergency Food
Basket and the Community Pantry Program. Each household can access
any of the food sources one time a month.
The Community Pantry Program's source of food is entirely supplied by the community. From school
food drives to the annual Postal Carrier food drive, this resource
is critical because it is focused to help the working poor families
in our community. Hundreds of thousands of pounds of food items are
donated then distributed locally. We stock culturally appropriate
items and other necessities like dairy products, surplus produce and
breads. We also ask for and stock an array of “personal hygiene”
items as well as baby food and diapers. These too are critical for
families who have infants, seniors and the uninsured.
You can help us by donating excess food or personal hygiene items
year round. |
