Donors aid looted day care center SAN LEANDRO — When something bad happens to one of their own, community members have been known to step up to the plate to lend a helping hand. So it was no real surprise that they would do it again to assist the long-standing Davis Street Family Resource Center. Last month the nonprofit organization's Jefferson Elementary School day care site was burglarized and suffered a loss of about $700 worth of items. Candy that was supposed to be used for a fund-raiser, along with educational CDs and DVDs, plus 15 children's video games were stolen from the facility. In addition, windows and a vending machine were smashed open. Although it was a minor setback, it was not one the nonprofit could afford. After The Daily Review reported the incident two weeks ago, donations started coming in, said doMetryse Lewis, the site supervisor. Lewis said a man from the Alameda County Resource Center donated a $700 check to Davis Street, while two parents from the day care gave personal checks of $50 and $60, respectively. Parents of some of the other Davis Street day care sites also donated DVDs and a DVD player. And San Leandro-based Stepping Stones Youth Program gave the Jefferson day care a CD player, as well. "There has been a lot of community support, and I'm very thankful for it," she said. "The children are really appreciative, too." Lewis said no arrests have been made yet and that the San Leandro Police Department is still investigating the case. Davis Street is a nonprofit with a mission to help low-income people living in the Eden Area — San Leandro, San Lorenzo, Castro Valley, Ashland and Cherryland — improve their quality of life through short- and long-term assistance.
